Do you like naxals or maoists?Submitted by busybee on Sun, 08/15/2010 - 13:15 Is Maoist movement a result of politics or poverty?
Unfortunately, Maoist Movement is a result of inefficient politics in our country. The rise of many political movements has its deep roots in the history of India after independence. The Maoist movement is indeed one among them but strategically, the movement is quite violent and rebellious in its every course of action as witnessed by the Government of India.
Started as an uprising for the upliftment of the poor, this movement has done quite the opposite. Being influenced by the movement in China led by Mao Zedung, the Communist Party of India(CPI) was started in India by some activists to spread the principles of communism and to abolish feudalism at the grassroots level. Later, the party metamorphosed to form Communist Party of India, Maoist (CPI-M). Soon after the tactful act by Jyoti Basu, the then minister of state for home of West Bengal, who sent forces to suppress the activists supporting farmers and to evacuate them from their native places, the party split into two groups. Because of the opportunistic politicians, a number of innocent farmers were killed in that incident. The leader turned politicians of the CPI-M proved to be hypocrites. From then on, their view of the people changed and they remained unmindful of the sufferings of the common people.
Though the politician-leaders of the movement popularized the slogan ‘Land to the tiller ‘ to attract masses, they in fact triggered a different kind of atrocity. Considering industrialization, the politicians dislodged thousands of farmers from Nandigram, the notorious district known for brutal attacks by Maoists in West Bengal. The forces used to enforce the orders of the politicians raped hapless village women. Thus, the politician- leaders of the movement adopted what is known as Intellectual Bankruptcy.
Communist parties turned out to be conspiratorial forces. Leaders of the movement conspired plans that directly afflicted the poor people, while at the same time, proved greatly advantageous to the upper sections of the society. This led to the division of classes. Rich were getting richer everyday whereas the poor were becoming poor as it’s happening today. The party leaders followed autocracy in the name of democracy. Their methods were too conventional and ineffectual. They polluted every sphere of human activities. Money allotted to carry out the development projects has been dried up by them. They branded all those who protested as ‘exploiters’ and ‘conspirators’. They committed inhumane activities and followed dictatorship in order to remain in power.
In order to fight against these atrocities by the politicians, the Maoist movement supporting the tribal people involved students, peasants and farmers. It started its operations in almost 200 districts of India. These parts of the country where the Maoists rule were collectively known as the Red Corridor. They collected revenues and provided parallel education. They formed what is known as Local Self Government in these parts of the country. In the last twenty years or so, the Maoists have killed about 6000 people. Ironically, the security forces employed to enforce law and order by the Government have also achieved a similar figure in killing people. Recently in the year 2008, Maoists have blasted a landmine near an industrial site where the chief minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was attending the inauguration ceremony and their effort was unsuccessful.
Though it may appear to all of us that the Maoists have created an insurgency mainly because of dire poverty and unemployment, we are not generally aware of the incidents that led to their mutiny against the Government of India (i.e. against the anti-democratic politicians) apart from the reporters and journalists writing cover stories. They in fact have killed only the corrupt politicians according to Mr. M.K. SatyaNarayana, the Governor of Jharkand. Considering the fierce extremism exhibited by the Maoist rebels and the true incidents that have led them to do so, it is not unfair to declare that the movement is indeed a result of anti-democratic politics. As a result, the situation has started to backfire the politicians.
